How will you use it- Practically speaking, the use of your square coffee table will ultimately determine what material you should choose. Some materials are more solid and durable while others are used for the sole purpose of being inexpensive and more affordable, though may or may not last as long as you would like. Once you figure out what the most common use of your table will be, match that use to the material that is strong enough and durable enough to handle it.

Materials that are Inexpensive and Low-end- These tables are generally made from materials like: plywood, particle board, or MDF. These materials are typically light-weight compared to solid woods and may actually be hollow inside, so if under heavy use or moved around a lot, beware of puncturing or gouging the material as it will cause unsightly damage that is difficult to repair. While solid color or faux wood grain plastic laminate may coat plywood and particle board to create a smooth finish, MDF is already smooth and able to be painted. Square coffee tables made of these materials are typically inexpensive and will hold up to average, normal use, but be careful of heavy objects as they could cause the table to bow. Also, lighter weight materials may cause the table to slide out of place with a simple nudge. Lastly, check the finish/coating on top to assure it can withstand condensation from drinks that may cause water rings or stains. If there are no concerns with the above issues, an inexpensive coffee table may be right for you and your budget!

Common Solid Material- Wood is typically the material of choice. Wood tables are available in a plethora of painted and stained finishes and have the beautiful appeal of wood grain lines while also being very durable. Wood is still at risk for warping, however, but faithful polishing and a controlled environment that is not too dry will help prevent it. Plastic laminate finishes are still available on wood coffee tables to protect from water rings but others will be coated multiple times with a clear wax. This finish may still be subject to water stains, so invest in coffee table coasters if you plan on keeping your table water ring and stain free over the years. If any chips, cracks, or gouges occur, home stores and home improvement stores carry products that will either disguise or completely fix the imperfection. You may spend a little more money; but overall, wood is a practical choice that will last.

Miscellaneous Materials- You can find tables that mix materials and create a focal point or conversation piece for your living area. Glass, granite, marble, and slate are common solid surfaces that are inset in a wood coffee table top or even one that is wrought iron or metal. Whatever table top material you choose, you may select a different material for the legs to create interest or creativity.
